December 07, 2006Henry and MittensSo, good old Henry the Navigator decided that he needed to see a bit of town before heading off to his next port of call. As luck would have it, he was with me when I visited my favorite statue in DC, the Awakening:
While I was at Hains Point, I saw the most fabulous thing:
***** So, the mitten. I finished the first one way back when, and it was such a pain I've really been dreading the second one. But, for some reason this week I've been inspired by a "finish what I've started" mood, so out it came.
Almost done. That's everything except the cuff, the thumb and [the worst part] the weaving of the ends. There's a lot of ends on these suckers! [If any of the Irregulars feel like helping a girl out -- name your price.] Anyway, the next time these appear, they'll be finished. And that will be a great feeling. i love your picture of henry on location! when i lived in DC, i occassionally visited hains point ... haven't thought of it in years, though. what a great place for amanda's challenge! you showed everyone one of the capital's lesser-known treasures. :) Posted by: laura at December 8, 2006 06:57 AMI can't believe I'm admitting this in a public forum, buuuuuut, I kind of like weaving in ends. It appeals to the OCD part of my nature. No price, just your silliness! Posted by: Elspeth at December 8, 2006 07:34 AMI find the Awakening man a little frightening, and you've totally supported that by showing him eating the box. Freaky. You know I'll help with those ends... at no price. Just 'cause I love ya. I can't believe how fab those mittens are - they almost make me want to make them. Almost. I'll have to look at them again in person to see if I'm that crazy. ;) But your sister is gonna LOVE them! Posted by: Holly at December 8, 2006 08:24 AMAwakening is a really awesome scupture... I always think they are going to reappear so on occasion I have a hard lump where I *really* wove it in. so cute. Cool photos. The eagles are just awesome! I would have freaked!! Good luck with the mittens. I'm one of those quirky people that likes finishing work. Getting everything just so... Posted by: Leah at December 8, 2006 10:07 AMThe eagles are George and Martha; kind of like the official U.S. mascots, if we had any. :) (I know the bald eagle IS our National Mascot, but I mean this specific pair.) They used to have a nest on the old Wilson Bridge. Not sure where they're nesting now. Martha was badly injured a while back, and they'd taken her to Delaware to be healed, then released her there in DE when she was healed. She flew all the way back to D.C. and found George. Marvelous story. They are so glorious. Lucky you! Posted by: Liz Cadorette at December 8, 2006 11:37 AMOoh! I've never been to Hains Point before! I'm going to have to go on a field trip soon - maybe in the spring. It's COLD out there! Posted by: dani at December 8, 2006 01:21 PMWhat pretty mittens! You are a fabulous knitter! And I love your blog! Now I am going for a walk around the block wearing the navy blue scarf you knit two years ago. No eagles around here. Posted by: jean at December 8, 2006 02:21 PMi love the photos of henry and the very large, very hungry man. the mitten though...oh my word is it ever gorgesous! is this your own pattern? Posted by: amanda at December 8, 2006 06:04 PMthe awakening looks awesome! and cant wait to see the mitts :) Posted by: stinkerbell at December 9, 2006 02:41 AMI had the same idea with my YA box (although I haven't gotten around to posting the photos).... =) And I was not so lucky as to see eagles (although it was dark by the time I got to Hains Point, so those eagles could have been there snickering at me the whole time as I tried to take photos without actually being able to see if the box was showing up in the shot (thank god for digital cameras)! Posted by: sprite at December 9, 2006 05:15 AMWhat an amazing sculpture! I've never see that before. And lovely mitten. You're almost there! Posted by: diana at December 9, 2006 05:21 PMAnn, I LOVE those mittens -- what pattern are you using? And is it hard? :) Posted by: gwen at December 11, 2006 09:40 AMI need to get to Awakening man - it looks amazing! Those mittens - they will be so pretty when they are done! Posted by: Stacey at December 11, 2006 11:23 AMWhat an amazing statue...like a giant buried in the earth. Posted by: fin at December 22, 2006 12:16 PM |
