October 10, 2006Of Stripes and ChecksIt wasn't much of a fun weekend -- that will come in a few days, when we head to Nashville for a friend's wedding. Rather, it was a very productive weekend -- lots of accomplishing tasks that I'd been putting off for a while. But I managed to sprinkle some fun in too--JT took me to see Cabaret on Sunday -- that was great! I'd never seen it. And I finally got to put this to use:
Checkerboard cake! Made for Knit'n'Nosh on Friday night. I made a maple icing that wasn't too good, but it was thin enough that it didn't detract from the rest of the cake. The cake itself was delicious! (Recipe from the Fanny Farmer Baking Book). And, in between doing chores at home and helping friends paint their new palatial apartment, I did take a few knitting breaks. It helped that there were good football games on. You know I love the football knitting. So I finally finished these:
In fact, I had enough left over to make a secondary gift for this friend, who just found out some happy news:
She's expecting.

oh, now that is so cool!! love both pairs! Posted by: carole at October 10, 2006 08:58 AMThose are so cute! Matching little socks!! My sister has a checkerboard cake pan also - we love using it! Posted by: Stacey at October 10, 2006 09:14 AMOoh, I love Cabaret! It's so scandalous and provacative. The movie is GREAT, too if you want to check it out. Also, that cake looks like magic. Love the socks and the baby socks. A perfect present combo. Posted by: Jenna at October 10, 2006 09:21 AMSuch cute baby socks to go with the momma socks! I enjoyed seeing you Friday and am sorry I didn't get to taste the checkerboard cake (tummy was mad that day). Your grandma knows the checkerboard cake pan is in good hands with you. Just think...one day, you can make checkerboard cake with YOUR grandkids!!! Posted by: Rossana at October 10, 2006 09:22 AMlove them! too cute. That is a really cool cake. Mmmm. cake. I spent the afternoon with your grandmother on Tuesday and she was so pleased that you asked for the pan and had made the cake! I can only imagine all the memories that came to mind in the process.
