May 02, 2005Monday MorningBonehead moments in knitting: Going to the yarn shop on a Sunday afternoon to work on the Rebecca cardi ties. Get there, unpack sweater and realize that the yarn for the ties is still at home, on the couch. Ooof. A sure sign that you didn't start the day with enough coffee. Luckily, I did have a secondary project with me. This is a diamond-patterned baby blanket, using a reversible seed stitch diamond pattern out of one of the stitch pattern books I had. It fit the bill because it was both reversible and easily memorizable. I'm using up some Cotton Fleece I have had in the stash for a while, since an ill-fated attempt to make Kyoto. The color is putty -- a nice dark ivory:
I worked on this on the train to and from Philadelphia, and it was nice soothing traveling knitting. It also seems to be going more quickly than I expected ... I'm already about 1/5 done. Yay! So, I knitted on it a few more rows at the happy place, and then picked up the cardi ties when I got home. Actually, just one tie. Wow. Stockinette strips are boring... and too short to really be mindless knitting, since there's all that switching direction involved every 20 stitches. I got about halfway through the long tie.
I also continued my schizophrenic-project day by knitting about a dozen rows on the linen lace swatch. Only a few rows left, but I started to get tired so I put it down. (I'm smart enough to know that lace + tired = BAD.) Anyway, stay tuned; the lace swatch results should come in the middle of this week. Comments
Your Rebecca cardi does look like an elephant in that picture... but it's also looking great and almost done! The baby blanket will be very pretty. Posted by: Shelby at May 2, 2005 07:07 AMDon't feel bad. I showed up at SNB one evening and completely forgot my project! Now THAT's boneheadedness! =p Posted by: Rossana at May 2, 2005 07:23 AMYour cardi totally looks like a fuzzy elephant in that picture - cute! For short stockinette rows, you may consider learning how to knit "backwards" - moving stitches from right needle to the left - which doesn't involve any turning. Posted by: grumperina at May 2, 2005 08:06 AMLook at you, three big projects at once ... you're a knitting machine! Your cardi is going to look fabulous!! Posted by: Erin at May 2, 2005 08:47 AMoh that is one reddish orange elephant alright! now if I could get my act together to make me one of those tops :) Posted by: stinkerbell at May 2, 2005 09:07 AMIt's not strange, it does look just like an elephant. All of the project switching should keep your brain and hands happy. Posted by: Lauren at May 2, 2005 10:35 AMMmm. Love the blanket. That's good train knitting. Posted by: Colleen at May 2, 2005 07:23 PMi've found that when knitting narrow sections of stockinette it's sometimes more fun/easier/faster to knit them front-facing--meaning you don't turn the work, instead you insert the right needle into the left (a few careful inserts of the needle and then turns to check the back will demonstrate how simple this technique really is), if you knit continental style, then on the purl rows of front-facing knitting it will be like knitting english style but with the yarn in your left hand. it's a very useful technique, so if nothing else you can practice this on your rebecca ties! hope this helps :D Posted by: jade at May 3, 2005 06:43 AM |
