December 21, 2004Happy End-of-'04Wow, thanks everyone for your nice comments on my Clap! I was really happy with the way it turned out. And yes, I did give some thought to keeping it for myself.... but no, that's not what this season is about, is it? In any event, I went straight from finishing le Clap to toiling away on the thrummed mittens. After about the third round of thrums, I had a startling realization. Can you tell what's wrong with these pictures?
I'm knitting them inside out! I'm not sure why I didn't realize it until now. Or why on all of the other things I've made on circs (hats, socks, cowls) it never occured to me to question why the right side was on the inside of the tube, instead of the outside. In fact, if I hadn't thought about the way the Harlot's thrummy pictures looked, it might not have occured to me that I was doing anything wrong. SO. Is this fixable? Should I even bother to rip? Should I finish this one, and then try to learn how to knit in the round the right way for the second? Should I be worried that I'm doing something else really basic really wrong? Eh. I couldn't really get riled up about it last night. I'll deal with it later. Instead, I cast on for a little knitting therapy, aka a simple ribbed scarf in Lorna's Laces Angel:
That's colorway Confetti, an ivory base with splashes of lilac, mauve, clay, lime and cornflower. (I've had it in stash for almost a year, but this deserves much better than hanging out in stash.)(And it looks like it's no longer available, according to the Lorna's Laces site.) I started out with 32 stitches, but the colors were doing weird things, so I narrowed it to 24 stitches and I think that should work. Of course, I do a quick trip to Theresa's archives, and find out that she used size 9 needles on hers -- I'm using size 7s. Maybe I'll do a little swatch with the second skein and see which I prefer. Either way -- good god, this stuff is snuggly. It's a nice project to hunker down with. This is likely my last entry until 2005. If you're around town, I'll be at Knit Happens tomorrow night, but I plan to stay largely technology-free for the rest of '04. Wishing everyone peace and love as they ring in the new year. And lots of knitting! Posted by Ann at December 21, 2004 07:29 AMComments
Your Angel scarf is heavenly, teehee! ;) I had a disaster when trying to knit a thrummed project, this was prior to the Harlot pictures though. Wishing you some of the best holidays to you and yours! :) Posted by: ~Jo~ at December 21, 2004 07:56 AMHi! Been enjoying your blog... thanks for writing. :-) About your inside-out mittens -- all you need to do is flip them right-side out, and pass the ball of yarn through the middle (to get the working yarn back on the outside), and you'll be OK again. People actually often knit fair-isle inside-out in the round to keep the strands from puckering, so you just un-vented this :-). Posted by: Bea at December 21, 2004 08:24 AMHi Ann! Beautiful scarf! I agree with Bea, the inside-out mittens can just be turned inside out (or outside in!)...I can't imagine having to frog the thrummed bits! Happy holidays!!! Posted by: Felicia from sweetgeorgia at December 21, 2004 08:48 AMthat yarn looks lovely, and fuzzy two of my prime fetish points. I wish the site gave an idea as to how the colors would mottle when they show you teh mutli colors.... and if you have the time how is the angora fuzzing- are you sneezing all over or is it fuzzy and staying put?? Posted by: stinkerbell at December 21, 2004 09:47 AMI LOVE THAT SCARF!! (Thought that I should let you know just how I feel, lol.) It's quite snuggly and it may just "disappear" when it's done... *said with an angelic look on my face* Bea has it right about the mitts. Just turn them inside out and pass the yarn through - it happened to me all the time when I was learning how to knit socks on two circs. :) Posted by: Holly at December 21, 2004 01:03 PMThe mittens are going to be adorable! I think I've read somewhere that it's a good idea to knit inside out in the round to keep things from stretching out. Looking forward to hearing from you in 2005 - Have a Wonderful Holiday!! Posted by: Shelby at December 21, 2004 02:04 PMAaaggh! Discontinued colorway? Wish I could get me some of that. It's beautiful! Posted by: Erika at December 21, 2004 07:21 PMThe mitts are beautiful, and I'd just keep knitting them the way you know. If you do turn them right-side-out and knit that way, I think you'd be knitting the other direction, like if you turned in the middle of a row, so it would leave a little hole. I think. Your scarf is beautiful, too...so fuzzy. Happy 2005! Posted by: Lizzie at December 27, 2004 03:37 PMlove the clapotis, the scarf, and the inside-out mittens! happy 2005 to you too! Posted by: melissa j at December 28, 2004 12:55 PMDon't frog 'em! If your hats have been coming out, why couldn't a mitten? I agree re turning them inside out afterwards. HAPPY HOLIDAYS, ANN!
